Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate : 3DS vs Switch
Introduction
MHGU for Switch presents itself as an upgrade from the 3DS version. In some ways, (when it comes to textures, for example) that is true, but this article will show the ways in which the port fails when compared to the 3DS version.
As a side note, I'm not a graphics enthusiast nor a photographer, so you should trust the images more than the things I say about them.
And before we begin, know that the full gallery of comparison shots is at the bottom of the article.
Differences:
Volumetric Lighting
Shadows
It's somewhat common for the port to ruin some of the shadows present in a few zones of each map. Maybe around one to two zones are affected by this per locale.
Depth Fog
Missing much more often than shadows is fog, to the point that almost any zone that has a noticeable amount of it in the 3DS version is missing that fog on Switch, or has a considerably reduced amount.
Texture Changes (focusing on the sky)
I'll admit the HD textures added for the Switch release tend to look really nice. However, some of them don't quite match the originals, and a small difference between textures is specially noticeable when it affects the skybox.
...This skybox looks like it uses the same texture, but it's implemented in a very different way...
...and others are just completely different to the original.
Object Lighting
To me, this minor graphical issue is one of the most annoying.
These gathering points that should blend in with the environment without issue look bright and out of place.
It looks like it also affects monsters, but I haven't taken the time to compare them between versions.
Hue
For some reason, some zones look warmer or colder than usual.
- The remaining differences are quite small, so I barely have anything to say about them.
Monster Carcasses
Some of the carcasses were made less repulsive. (It could also just be a region difference, as 3DS images are from the japanese release, while Switch images show the western release. )
Reflections
Vignette
Baked Light Shafts
I only know of this small area that's missing some pre-baked light shafts, but it was imperative that I point it out.
Fin
I'll probably NOT waste my time again comparing two games that are this similar. Next time, I'll compare Ocarina of Time N64 (with Reloaded textures) vs 3DS. Even if there seems to be a clear winner, I promise there's something there worth comparing.
